Bonds portraitiert die besondere Verbindung, die wir Zwillingsschwestern haben und gleichzeitig unsere Verbundenheit zum Klavier, dem Instrument, dem schon früh unsere Faszination galt. Gleichzeitig erzählt Bonds die Geschichte von Geschwistern und Zwillingen in der Musik(-Geschichte) und der griechischen Mythologie.
Mit Werken von Fanny und Felix Mendelssohn, Maurice Ravel und Pauchi Sasaki möchten wir menschliche Interaktionen und ihre Dynamiken erforschen und sie in einem großen Tongemälde verflechten.
Unser Erleben von Musik und unsere künstlerische Identität sind in unserer Verbindung als Zwillinge tief verwurzelt. Das Klavier ist für uns Symbol unserer gemeinsamen Welt, da wir auf diesem Instrument unsere individuellen musikalischen Gedanken in einer gemeinsamen Sprache ausdrücken können. Wir verstehen Musik als lebendigen Dialog, den wir intuitiv und für die Außenwelt nicht sichtbar miteinander führen. Anfangs mögen wir uns sehr ähnlich und schwer unterscheidbar erscheinen – aber je näher man herantritt, desto klarer wird das Bild und die Unterschiede in unseren Persönlichkeiten und unserem Spiel werden deutlicher.
Genau wie Daphnis und Chloe (Maurice Ravel), zwei Findelkinder, die, obwohl sie getrennt aufwuchsen, ihre besondere Verbindung immer spürten, finden auch wir immer wieder zueinander und bilden eine musikalische Einheit.
Pauchi Sasaki, eine peruanische Komponistin, die von der besonderen Dynamik zwischen uns Zwillingen inspiriert wurde, erzählt in Artemis recitative, einer Komposition für zwei Klaviere, electronics und Streichquartett, die Geschichte von Artemis und Apollo, die wie zwei Seiten derselben Medaille waren – unzertrennlich und doch unterschiedlich. Ihre Faszination gilt der magnetischen Spannung, dem ständigen Wechselspiel aus Anziehung und Abstoßung, Reflexion und Ergänzung. Durch die Arbeit mit Komponist:innen loten wir neue musikalische Perspektiven aus und verschieben die Grenzen des Klavierduorepertoires.
Einen großen Teil dieses Projekts widmen wir Geschwistern, die die Musikwelt nachhaltig beeinflusst und verändert haben: Fanny und Felix Mendelssohn. Obwohl sie mit vier Jahren Altersunterschied geboren wurden, wuchsen sie fast wie Zwillinge auf und pflegten ein besonders inniges, vielschichtiges Geschwisterverhältnis, dem wir eine zentrale Bedeutung in dieser Aufnahme zumessen möchten. In diesem Projekt vereinen wir Originalwerke und Transkriptionen des Duo-Repertoires mit zeitgenössischer Musik einer der vielversprechendsten Komponistinnen ihrer Generation, die zusammen wie ein Kaleidoskop aus Emotionen, Gedanken und Farben wirken.

Bonds talks about the strong connection between us twin sisters and the bond between ourselves and the piano, the instrument we fell in love with first.
At the same time it tells the story of siblings and twins in music and greek mythology. This project aims at forming a musical unit of works by Maurice Ravel, Pauchi Sasaki and Fanny & Felix Mendelssohn which we connect and combine with the interest of exploring human interactions and dynamics.
Bonds pays homage to the fascinating and complex connection between two individuals and unites a collection of compositions of great significance for us personally.
Being twins it has always been the natural approach to share the keyboard and from very early on we knew we wanted to be a piano duo. At first we might seem very similar and indistinguishable- but if one comes closer the picture changes and the differences in our personalities and playing become clearer. We complement each other and just like Daphnis and Chloe, two foundlings that always felt their special connection despite the fact that they were separated as children and grew up individually, we always find back to each other and reunite on the piano to form a musical unit.
Diving even further into Greek mythology, Artemis, a composition for two pianos, electronic track and string quartet by Peruvian composer Pauchi Sasaki, who found inspiration in the special dynamics between twins, tells the story of Artemis and Apollo who were effectively two sides of the same coin - inseparable yet different. One without the other was inconceivable- the magnetism in this relationship is obvious.
We would like to dedicate a big part of this project to two siblings that have influenced and changed the music world: Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn. Being born four years apart Fanny and Felix had an extraordinarily complex relationship and were extremely close to each other during their lives, to the point of thinking of themselves as twins.
Bonds is a project that has been in our head for a long time and we are truly honored to be able to connect major works of composers of the classical duo repertoire with contemporary music written by one of the most promising composers of her generation: Pauchi Sasaki. The choice of repertoire couldn’t be more personal and we hope to attract widespread interest with this album that is going to be so rich in colors and intellectual depth.
